The Behaviour Science of Social (In)Justice: Exploring Root Causes and Solutions
Dr. Andrew Bonner, PhD, BCBA-D, RBA(Ont.)
Abstract: Racism, sexism, ableism, and other forms of structural exclusion are well documented features of Canadian culture. Why do these problems persist even when millions of people want a more just society? Tracing the historical influence of colonial systems on how western societies organize behaviour and distribute resources, this talk examines social injustice through the lens of behavioural science. The talk reframes injustice not simply as a matter of policy or practice, but as the product of more than 500 years of cultural evolution. Particular attention is given to how cultural systems that prioritize profit maximization, together with rigid hierarchies that rely on coercion, have historically perpetuated social injustice. The session concludes by highlighting practical approaches capable of shifting cultural contingencies toward equity and inclusion, showing how behavioural science can help build more just communities.
