Abstract

Every ABA organization has as its goal the desire to provide the highest quality care. Perspectives on what clinical excellence means: how it is defined, measured, and achieved will be reviewed from the organizational perspective and the individual practitioner.  The systems that support the various stakeholders and the all-important “handshake” between organizational guidelines and practice standards will be discussed.

Dr. Jane Howard is a licensed psychologist and a BCBA-D.  Dr. Howard received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Western Michigan University. co-founded Therapeutic Pathways in Modesto, California, and is Professor Emeritus (Psychology) at California State University, Stanislaus, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in behavior analysis and child clinical psychology. In founding Therapeutic Pathways, Dr. Howard recognized an important need—a state-of-the-art ABA service organization for individuals with autism spectrum disorder—and under her leadership, Therapeutic Pathways has been recognized as a top clinical and training site recognized across the field for its focus on high-quality services and thorough use of the scientist-practitioner model in ongoing clinical practice as well as its systematic approach to staff training and mentorship. During her tenure on the Board of Directors of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, she oversaw the development of the practice guidelines, which are now the universal standard for services in this area and have been adopted by hundreds of funders.  As a member of the Board of Directors of the Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP), she is currently working with other stakeholders on the 3rd edition of these guidelines. While her other contributions are significant, her published research has been highly influential, with several controlled clinical studies that compared intensive ABA and intensive eclectic treatment of autism spectrum disorder—serving as a foundation of the research basis for effective treatment.  In addition, Dr. Howard is an ABAI Fellow and the 2023 recipient of the BACB’s Michael Hemingway Award Behavior Analysis Award.
